How To Make Campuses Safer?

As I was reading again this morning about the horror that happened at VA Tech yesterday, there was an article by Time Magazine, entitled, "How to Make Our Campuses Safer." He drones on by saying that metal detectors and video surveillance would make it safer. I am waving my Bullshit Flag right now. Vigorously.

You want to make our students safer? I can tell you right now: Freshman year, every student takes a Self Defense shooting class. Those students that wish, after passing the class and other legislative hoops that state and federal governments have established, may arm themselves and carry concealed handguns on campus. It is that simple. Give the people that attend that school (and those that work there) the means to defend themselves. Police response times can be as much as four minutes; a lot of people were dead by then .... Last year the VA General Assembly shot down the opportunity for students to do just that, for the appearance of feeling safer (hat tip to Kim.).
